Liturgical Ministries

The priest is not the only one who ministers at Mass. We are all called to actively participate by listening and responding to the readings, music, and prayers at Mass. At each Mass, a few are called to visibly participate in what goes on at Mass:

  • Altar Server - Boys and girls who have made their First Communion who assist the priest at the liturgy. We also have adults who serve at daily Mass and funerals as well as Sunday Masses.
  • Extraordinary Ministers of Communion – assist in the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass and to the sick and homebound
  • Arts and Environment (decorating): Assist in decorating the worship space to reflect the seasons of the liturgical year. Those with talent in art design, floral arrangement or sewing are encouraged to volunteer.
  • Greeters - Parish volunteers who warmly welcome parishioners as they enter the Church for Mass
  • Hospitality - Organizing coffee hours or receptions after Mass or other events
  • Lector - Reader who proclaim the Scriptures at Mass and other services.
  • Liturgical Linen Service - Responsible for the preparation and care of the altar linens. This includes the washing and ironing of purificators, corporals, and altar linens.
  • Ushers - volunteers who assist people to their seat if necessary. They also take up the collection.
  • Sacristans - Duties include preparing the altar for Mass and cleaning the altar following Mass
  • Musicians - Music is part of the way we give praise to God. If you have been given the gift of music let us know how you might like to help.
  • Neighborhood Ministry - Organizing coffee or luncheon receptions after funerals at St. Mary Church
  • Church Cleaners - help on a rotating schedule to clean a church

One might also help in prayer services outside of Mass such as Stations of the Cross held on Friday evenings  in the various churches during Lent.
